Newborn Safety Week: Day 3

Post inspired by Learn Shoot Inpire’s Newborn Safety Week.

I’ve worked up a quick tutorial for re-creating an image in Photoshop Elements. This isn’t the best image or the best edit (I’m 3 weeks postpartum and this is my own kiddo who didn’t make his own session easy… I beg your grace), but it is one way to erase someone supporting the baby while giving the illusion of an impossible pose.

Here’s my image straight out of the camera. That’s dad’s hand keeping his head upright.

Rather than doing a composite with this image (I had a second image of dad’s hand under his chin), I decided to simply erase dad’s arm.

First I created a duplicate layer of the background.

Then using the eyedropper tool I selected some of the color above his head.
Switching to the brush tool at 100% opacity I brushed away dad’s hand.

Using the brush at a lower opacity (around 16-25% I think) I brushed the background and foreground to create a bit more seamless-ness in the backdrop.
Then I completed a clean edit (although I’m still not happy with skin tone or those little fingers that I accidentally cropped out due to a mirror issue my camera is having… sigh).

And there you have it: a simple way to keep a newborn safe while still getting a great shot :)
